Bill Mellor joined the Army after completing high school in Western Australia and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, at the end of 1971. Following a stint as a platoon commander in an infantry battalion, he undertook flying training with the RAAF and the Army and gained his wings as an Army helicopter pilot in 1973.

In a thirty five year military career, he undertook a mix of flying, instructional and staff appointments. Highlights included commanding the 162nd Reconnaissance Squadron and the appointment as the first Commanding Officer of the 5th Aviation Regiment when it was established to accept the transfer of the battlefield helicopters from the Air Force to the Army. In addition, Bill flew on survey operations in PNG and the Torres Straits, was a UN Observer in Kashmir, and commanded the Australian Force in Somalia in 1992-93.

Bill had three postings to the US, the last as the Military Attaché in Washington from 2000 to 2003. He is a graduate of the University of Queensland, the US Army War College and he attended the National and International Security Managers course at Harvard University in 2001.

He is currently the Managing Director of Due Vigilance Pty Ltd, and consults in the defence and aerospace world. He is also the President of the Australian Army Aviation Association and of the Royal United Services Institute in Queensland, on the Board of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland) and a trustee of the General Douglas Macarthur Brisbane Museum.
